It took moving away from New Jersey for me to become fiercely proud of being from there. It's also a litmus test - tell people you are from New Jersey and if they are genuinely still interested in talking with you further, they are keepers!
My mom was on a group trip in Europe recently and in conversation at the dinner the first night she introduced herself to someone and the chit chat went to "where are you from" He said Indiana, she said New Jersey and - get this - he laughed, turned to the person next to him and never spoke another word to her the entire trip. Honestly the whole story started activating some unhinged Christopher Moltisanti within me...
You do not want to get Christopher angry, lol! Honestly, it baffles me when people have that reaction, but it does happen. I hope your mom had a fabulous trip anyway and didn’t let the haters bring her down :)
I hiked across NJ with some friends last year, on the AT, and we were struck by the diversity of the scenery on the trail. Mountain ridges, rhododendron tunnels, beaver dams, cricks ;), pastures that felt like upstate NY, even a freshwater marsh with a miles-long boardwalk through it. Also: rocks. Sharp, craggy, plentiful rocks. New Jersey really does have it all!
Yay! This makes me so happy! What a cool trip you took. I'm so glad that you got to see some of hidden gems of the state (cricks and all!) Lots of people don't associate NJ with the AT, but we've got a lil piece of that too :)
